Group Discussion 1 (on CALL) :
Question 1: Did the
course incorporate the use of computer in the teaching and learning?
Our group chooses morphology as our
theme in this blog. Yes, the lecturer of the course does incorporate the use of
computer in the teaching and learning process. The teacher uses the computer in
assisting her in teaching process such as finding the translation or definition
of a term, using power point slides to explain and many more. The students are
asked to do assignments by using the computer to help them in finishing the
works and ease them. Apart from that, the students have to use the computer in
searching extra information to accomplish the assignments.
Question 2: Are the
computer-based activities related to any of the 3 stages of CALL?
The computer-based activities are
related to two of the three stages which are the behaviourist CALL and the
integrative CALL. The behaviourist CALL is executed in which the computer acts
as a mechanical tutor. The lecturer uses the help of power point slides in
delivering the lecture to the students. Pattern drills are implemented in the
course and the students need to answer the questions that displayed on the
screen. The integrative CALL is also executed in this course whereby the
computer is merely a tool for the students in order to accomplish their tasks.
In this approach, the lecturer imposes the task-based and project-based method,
so that the students can improve the knowledge that they already got in the
class.
Question 3: What are
the important concepts in the 3 stages related to the activities?
There are two important concepts that
are related to behaviourist and integrative CALL. They are teacher centeredness
and collaboration of the teacher and the students. The course does incorporate
these two concepts in teaching and learning process. However, the communicative
CALL approach does not incorporate in this course whereby it encourages
discovery learning. Learner centeredness is executed in this course but with
different medium such as books and journals despite of using the computer. If this
CALL is incorporated in the course, the students will be enjoyed in learning
it.
